Somebody closed the lock of the entrance door to the building where I live with glue. I called the manager to find out if it’s only my key or a general problem. It’s not working since days. He said it will be fixed. That was yesterday. Nothing fixed so far. Sometimes it is still in the air, the past of the neighborhood. The probably oldest resident here, he is 85 years old I think, tells me always when I met him about the days when there were drug addicts in a rundown lobby, the management let it go, smoking in the house, carpets with burnt wholes from the cigarettes, he talks about released prisoners the government sent here, they trashed the house…until a new management took care of it. No carpets anymore these days, clean wood floors. Stories from 20 years ago maybe. But still, there is the searchlight of police helicopters I know by now, my bicycle always locked at the fence in front of the house was heavily damaged one day; one block down and you have all the abandoned furniture and broken TV’s on the street, one block in the other direction and your in the neighborhood of wealth and money…on the edge. Walking on Hollywood Blvd tells you a lot of these stories. A lot of cheap tourist shops nowadays, in between nice bars, new loft condos, restaurants, nightclubs – on the verge from past glory to new hype. Just lately going home <\/span><\/span>late night <\/span><\/span>surrounded by all these lights, signs, the Saturday night crowd on search of the exclusive party: It has nothing that would make you think of anything cultivated, inviting – it all seems so cheap, superficial, commercialized, ordinary. The new Kodak Theater is such a terrible disaster, an awful place. But suddenly it becomes a particular world itself, identifiable, characteristic, you find yourself in it, you develop feelings, imaginations, thoughts. It’s a landmark in a way, like the SOHO New York. It will constantly change, but never disappear.
