I went the first day, I walked through the park constantly looking for the tower and I couldn’t see it. After several map consultations and reorientations I could finally spot it. It gives and impressive structure the building. The copper with a perforation pattern generates a balance between the solid, massive appearance, almost like a bunker, and the subtle detailed fragility of a skin. Although the copper corresponds very well to the setting of the park landscape, it’s a very abstract building in this environment of otherwise more traditional setting of a well kept and preserved city. Makes you curious how the architects got to this point, passing all neighborhood and fundraiser hearings to finally build it. I liked the courtyards, the green of ferns against the copper, the lobby with a huge picture by Gerhard Richter, commissioned for this lobby as it said, spatially very generous. The braking line to the footprint of the tower: all grey concrete. Unfortunately in the exhibition spaces a lot of this rather expressive simple materiality got lost in more exclusive wood finish work. You don’t notice the copper anymore, I found it disappointing there is no relation to this façade system. The only place I could spot was the auditorium: above the stage a screen for projections and above another screen, the perforated copper to the entrance passageway (entrance is one of the courtyards). Something got somehow lost in the process from the outside to the inside. I thought it’s a typical H&dM: all attention to the exterior. But then I remembered the Laban Dance Centre or the Tate Modern in London, both very well carry on the exterior through the interior. I was missing this transition. Inside it’s quiet a conventional museum. Fantastic is the top floor of the tower, an observation deck open to the public. Not only can you overlook San Francisco, you also see below this massive copper block, continued over the roof: it’s all copper.

I was particularly curious in this museum, for obvious reasons.
