He is a rather quiet piano player, very focused, concentrated, reserved, out of the spectacle, the music itself more traditional jazz, but with the details doing something special to it. I remember very well his set at the knitting factory in New York, when a tuba took the place of the bass. One of these small interventions. And this time one song that broke out, with Latin American influence and rhythm; he announced it as a new departure and hoped the audience would like it. I did. It\u2019s what keeps jazz alive, the emphasis of jazz. Nothing is settled, you are free to improvise the way you like. I think jazz is able to accept pretty much every music stile you can think of.
