Visiting ACE Gallery, a series of portraits by Robert Wilson (VOOM Portraits). They are video recordings, although the models stayed motionless, only one was in clear action, all others only breathing, an eye shut, but basically quiet, like a photograph – with the main difference that the presentation medium was not paper but huge plasma screens. Illuminating, the colors and light are much more intense than just printed. Even more than Jeff Wall’s light boxes. The intensity was increased through the incorporated music to each portrait (Salma Hayek, above (a series of her, not just one), to Tchaikovsky’s swan’s lake) and the exhibition space. It’s a big gallery space, divided up in different rooms and compartments, each with one portrait (two or three in the biggest ones). So the single pieces are separated from each other spatially. Despite this vast spatial arrangement the sound (different for each portrait) created sometimes an unfortunate disturbing noise background. But basically it was an impressive, delightful walk through. The portraits very carefully staged in a masterful set of colors and light. Also one of the rare occasion were the digital screen didn’t appear just as rather overrated medium, but actually was an essential part of the picture.
