The end of the internet?

Main internet providers like AT&T, Comcast or AOL realized that they can increase their profit with regulations on the internet. Right now they provide only access, open for everybody to an unregulated extend. It is in the users full control. So they are looking for more regulations. Basically they want to have control about the webpages running through their service. It’s probably like cable-tv: you buy a package that provides access to certain webservices. Congress is pushing for corresponding laws.

The internet community is alarmed fighting this political process.

I think it’s the nature of the internet that it is completely unregulated and unlimited accessible for anybody. Internet has grown and is largely based on the idea that its network is free of regulations. Otherwise, yes, you can go for cable-tv or visit a book store. There you know what you get. Not in the internet. There are no publishers, no FCC, nobody telling me where the limits are. One of the big opportunities of internet is you can publish your information or whatever you think you need to publish directly without any intermediate marketing services. By regulations you start limiting this advantage and unique characteristics. Suddenly, someone is controlling between you and the end product, like everywhere else. Internet is like a platform, from the best to the worst at anybodies service. That generates the dynamic process and makes it so interesting.
